You might see a retractable leash referred to as a flexi leash based on the company that pioneered the retractable leash. It makes sense because these pet leashes do offer more flexibility than non-retractable pet leashes.

A retractable leash allows you to extend and shorten the leash quickly using a braking system and retracting device built into the hand held portion of the pet leash. It also keeps a bit of tension in the leash so it doesn’t hang loose or drag.

Other flexi leashes have the option of a mini flashlight that can attach to the pet leash for night use. Safety Concerns with a Retractable Leash
Retractable leashes are a little different than regular pet leashes so there are a few more safety guidelines to follow than with regular pet leashes. A retractable leash should come with a list of guidelines on how to use it and how not to use it, but here are some things to consider before buying one of these pet leashes:
- A retractable leash should only be used by an adult who understands the pet safety guidelines.
- If not used properly retractable leashes can cause rope burns or become wrapped around body parts, or become entangled in another pets leash
- Be careful when using a retractable leash around children as the leash can become wrapped around them or knock them over if the pet isn’t controlled.
- A retractable leash should only be used for walking; it shouldn’t be tied to a stationary object.
- These types of pet leashes work best on dogs that are well controlled; they’re not meant for use with uncontrollable dogs.
When used correctly a retractable leash can be a great addition to your walking routine because of the flexibility they can offer. They bring freedom and safety to both you and your pet when you’re out and about enjoying your walk.
